This is the main brain of your laptop/computer. The CPU to your notebook is like an engine to your car. The CPU affects the functionality of all the parts in the computer. There are two main manufacturers of CPU's (Intel and AMD). Intel is regarded as a better processor than AMD, but to casual users there is little noticeable difference. The new generation CPU's are dual core on CPU's, (Core 2 Duo or AMD's X2). It's like having 2 engines in one car. This will allow you to open applications faster, allow you to run those applications faster and be able to run more applications at the same time.

The hard disk drive is the storage device on your computer. It's like your garage, the more space you have the more garbage you can store in there. The hard drive is used to store applications (Microsoft Office, etc…), your operating system is stored on your hard drive and everything else (Pictures, Music, Movies, Games and so on.) An average hard drive is around 80GB; Windows XP takes up about 4GB of space while Windows Vista takes around 8GB of space on your hard drive. Applications can range from 1MB to 1GB of HDD space. Having more HDD space allows you to move around on your laptop with more ease same concept as your garage. Pictures are around 3MB, Videos are around 700MB, Songs are around 5MB and DVD movies are around 8GB. 1GB is equal to 1000MB.

The RAM along with the CPU helps you open applications such as Microsoft Office, Photoshop and other applications. The more memory you have the faster you can open these applications. The more RAM you have the quicker your applications run. More memory allows you to run more applications. Gamers usually need the maximum memory allowed, (2GB RAM). Casual users can survive using 512MB RAM – 1GB RAM. So if the CPU is like an engine to a car then RAM is like a component in the engine that makes things go faster and smoother.
